Meet 6 Creators and the Spark Behind Their Stories

Every comic on Toongether begins with something—a moment, a question, a feeling, a flash of “what if?” We asked six creators to tell us where their inspiration and ideas come from, how they keep going, and what keeps their stories alive. The answers are personal, heartfelt, and wildly different. That’s the beauty of it.

Here’s what inspires them.

⚔️ Benzenith ⚔️

My creative journey started when I was just a kid, falling in love with storytelling. Reading fairy tales and dreaming up new worlds really sparked my imagination. Watching my favorite movies and cartoons inspired me to create my own characters and stories.

Everyday life fuels my creativity too; I love capturing moments, feelings, and experiences. Connecting with fellow creatives and sharing our passions makes me feel part of a community and really fuels my artistic spirit!

Writing for me comes from a mix of curiosity and connection. My kids are my biggest inspiration; their endless imagination and innocent questions help me see the world in new ways. I’m always fascinated by the stories people share, each one filled with unique experiences and emotions.

Nature also plays a key role in my creativity; its beauty and chaos often inspire new ideas. Plus, great authors inspire me with their incredible words, pushing me to find my own voice. Ultimately, it’s the joy of sharing my thoughts and connecting with others that keeps me creating.

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember—but maybe it was the fact that I wasn’t supposed to that made me love it more. I went to a very academic school where creative writing wasn’t really celebrated, and that only made me more stubbornly devoted to it.

When toongether first launched, I was one of the earliest creators on the platform. It’s been incredible to watch it grow—not just the app itself, but the people. Seeing new voices, unexpected stories, and how quickly a community of support and creativity has formed... it’s been something really special to witness (and be part of).

What draws me in is the emotional weight of words. I love writing stories that carry deeper meaning—leaving readers sitting in silence for a second, thinking, “Wait, what did that really mean?” I’m drawn to philosophy, subtle emotion, and the quiet kind of meaning you almost miss unless you’re paying attention.

Most people are surprised by how dark or eerie my stories can be. I don’t always write what’s expected of me—and that’s kind of the point. I love eerie tension, unsettling questions, and stories that catch readers off guard. But I also find depth in simplicity. Realistic scenes can sometimes hit the hardest.

Sometimes I explore childhood (Chasing Yesterday), sometimes horror (Fractured Reflections), sometimes something soft but devastating (The Hands that Held Me). But no matter the genre, I’m always searching for that undercurrent—the thing you only see when you stop to really look.

What keeps me writing? It’s knowing that a story I wrote made someone feel something. That’s where the magic lives.

There’s a lot of things that inspire me, so it’s difficult to choose just one.

I guess what inspires me the most is the support I get from people that read my comics. Because it lets me know I’m doing something right.

I don’t think I get comments that often, but I like when people leave Toon-Ups saying how adorable the characters are or how excited someone is for the next episode. If I had to choose a favourite comment, I’d have to say one that Benzenith left saying The Ruffians will become stronger after The Meeting.

It really shows how much they understand the episode and that makes me so happy. There is one creator who inspired me more than others, just not on Toongether. I always thought Stan Lee was an amazing person. He really believed in what he was writing and that kind of passion is empowering.

I especially love how he talked about the creation of Spider-Man and how sometimes people will say something wouldn’t work, but then it ends up working. Stan Lee didn’t let anyone stop him and that’s why he succeeded in life.

🦋 Veruca Madison 🦋

Hi my name is Veruca Madison!!! I’ve been creating my whole life! I’m a huge Buffy fan (Veruca is actually a hybrid Slayer)! I’m super inspired by empowering characters, overcoming obstacles, action, adventures, puzzles! I love to be intrigued. Growing up I loved Harry Potter, Power Rangers, Sailor Moon and X:Men among others. Always a good versus evil and metaphors for life.

Before I joined toongether, I remember dabbling with AI when an ad popped up. “Do you want to create comics but you don’t have the time or skill to draw?” Umm…yes? I downloaded it immediately and alas my life completely changed!!! I wrote a saying years ago “A novel in my head is insanity. A novel on paper is genius.” Finally I could tell the stories that had been bouncing around in my head AND most importantly I could illustrate them! It was such an amazing freedom. I made my first few panels in 15 minutes. Veruca Madison’s origin story. I felt so empowered.

Then I began perusing the site and found Pocket Pixie, Ravencaw and Wish. Time Stop. Not only were they incredible creators, the community was showing them love and adoration! It was so compelling and awesome to witness.

Trapped Toongether was one of the first comics I read and I loved the creativity and introduction to the app! There are so many more I’ve read and been inspired by as well as thoroughly entertained. Then to top it off, these creators were super kind to me as an author even before I published!!! I would share screenshots and get so much encouragement.

When I finally did publish I got showered with love and it felt so amazing. My boys cheered and I cried. Finally a lifelong dream of being a published writer (save for a poem in a punk zine when I was 14) had come to fruition.

Everyone has their own style, flair and vibe. It’s such a treat to open the app and find new stories to explore and enjoy. The community is so supportive as well! The Discord is the most consistently active familial group I’ve ever been apart of! I love that anybody can tell their story and we all can’t wait to read it! What’s yours? Happy Tooning!

🎮 Wish 🎮

Let me tell you a little secret about creativity… I don’t always have a game plan when I create. Nope! Most of the time I’m just vibing with whatever feelings are floating around in my brain. Sometimes it’s deep and emotional, other times it’s just a spark of creativity or a random “what if?” moment that sets everything in motion.

When I first started posting on toongether, I had no clue what I was doing—or if anyone would even read my stories. But surprise! That didn’t even matter. Because the real treasure wasn’t likes or stats… it was the journey. The growth. The wild imagination.

One of my earliest metaphors was being stuck inside the app—just me, alone, with god-like powers of creation. (basically a god complex right ?) That was my way of processing all the wild, thoughts in my head.

I remember watching a podcast featuring the incredible PocketPixie. She dropped ideas about her Fates Game and after seeing her panels and I was instantly inspired. I saw the beautiful color palette in her panels and thought, “What if I made the opposite experience?” And just like that, Game Master was born! the Pastel color blocks where a homarage to the inspiration that started the thought the spark of creativity.

As I kept creating, something amazing happened: YOU. The community. The support. The feedback. Suddenly I wasn’t creating just for me anymore. I was building with you. I started experimenting more—trying different ways to let you feel my stories. My detective series Hello Detective puts you as the main character. In Season 2 of Wish, I added interactive game panels, and for the Community Special?

I even dropped epic music and jumped between stories like a multiverse speedrun written by the community . Imagine you’re reading a comic and suddenly—your name shows up in a crossword puzzle or your favorite author walks through a scene. Yup. That’s the vibe I go for. I want my stories to do more than entertain. I want them to give you escapism, surprise, connection… maybe even a smile when you need it most.

Whether I’m inspired by fellow in-app authors, real-world artists, or manga legends—I always remix it into something fresh. The more the toongether community interacts with me, the easier it is to create something awesome right back.

So if you’re reading my stuff, just know—I’m gonna do my best to break your expectations, make you feel something, and leave you with a “wait… what just happened?!” moment every time. That’s how I create. That’s how I connect. And that’s how I give back. Let’s keep dreaming, building, and breaking the box together.

I’ve been creative for as long as I can remember—probably since I was around eight. I spent most of my time drawing, especially trying to sketch anime characters, and writing stories for anyone who’d read them. While other kids asked for toys, all I ever wanted for Christmas was notebooks, pens, and pencils—which my mom found hilarious. But honestly, I’ve just always loved bringing ideas to life.

Inspiration comes from everywhere—music, stories, video games, life itself, and even the things I love or can’t stand. There’s always something that sparks a new idea. I take those ideas, twist them into something new in my stories, and make them my own.
