Content Guidelines
Updated: Oct 24, 2024
Hey there! Thanks for choosing toongether, your go-to app for bringing webcomics to life. Kartoon Inc. owns and operates this platform, and we're on a mission to make it the coolest spot online for storytellers like you.
By using toongether, you're agreeing to these Terms, which include our Community Guidelines (here), Privacy Policy (here) and Content Safety Guidelines (below). If you're not on board with them, sadly, you'll have to skip our awesome platform. It’s important, these Terms are a contract between you and us.
1. GOALS OF THIS PAGE
We want to share guidelines on what’s acceptable and what’s not. Those guidelines should be as clear as possible, to inform our moderation policy and keep it as objective and simple as possible. They are bound to evolve as we grow.
🐣 In case of a doubt, we will always favor our youngest users’ safety. In toongether, we want to avoid trivialized violence, sex scenes, drugs, racism and any kind of stories that can shock or harm.
Below are some clear content guidelines you should follow in toongether, keeping in mind that we are aiming for a 13+ audience while maintaining a safe, engaging platform for creative expression.
2. VIOLENCE
Permitted: Depictions of violence are acceptable, especially if they serve the story and do not glorify harm. For example, action sequences, fights, or even a death can be present, as long as the emphasis is on the narrative or emotional consequences rather than the act itself. This aligns with PG-13 standards, where violence may be present but should not be excessively detailed or prolonged.
Not Permitted: Graphic depictions of violence, such as explicit gore, suffering, or torture, are not allowed. Stories that focus heavily on the technical details of violent acts (e.g., planning and carrying out a murder) should also be avoided. Scenes of extreme brutality, especially with a focus on suffering, cross the line for our target audience.
3. Mental Health and other Sensitive Themes
Permitted: Storylines can mention or explore themes like suicidal thoughts or suicide, but the focus must be on the psychological and emotional impact, not on the act itself. Any depictions of suicide should be handled with care, emphasizing the consequences and emotional aftermath, and not romanticizing or trivializing it. Similarly, sensitive themes (e.g., grief, loss, trauma) are allowed, provided they are handled with sensitivity and care. The focus should be on emotional development and character reactions rather than on graphic details or shock value. This aligns with guidelines across media, where sensitive topics are allowed if treated with appropriate seriousness.
Not Permitted: Any content that is primarily designed to shock, disgust, or exploit sensitive topics is not acceptable. This includes graphic depictions of harm, torture, or excessive suffering for the sake of it. Detailed descriptions or step-by-step depictions of suicide, or focusing on the method, are strictly off-limits. Additionally, there should be no glamorization or glorification of self-harm or suicidal behaviors. And of course, no “kill yourself” in speech bubbles.
4. Sex and Nudity
Permitted: Romantic relationships or light references to affection are accepted of course.
Not Permitted: Explicit sexual content or nudity is not allowed in any form. Anything that involves sexual acts or suggestive content is inappropriate for our 13+ audience. This reflects both PG-13 and BBFC-12 standards, where sexual content is usually limited to brief, non-explicit mentions.
Note: while the current page focuses on storytelling, there’s a big topic around the images themselves. It’s hard to define clear rules here because this is about the physical representation of human body - in the context of sometimes biased AI models. If you see any asset that is not okay, never hesitate to use the flag icon to report this asset.
5. Swearing and Offensive Language
Not Permitted: We’ve already established a strict no-tolerance policy on anything that could be offensive, religious, or derogatory, and this remains in place for all stories. Any extreme or vulgar language, especially slurs or derogatory terms, are not allowed. No swearing at all on toongether at this stage - we know we’re going even beyond PG-13 here but we want to keep the tone of the platform respectful and safe for all users.
6. Drugs and substance abuse
Not Permitted: Stories that promote or depict drug use, substance abuse, or any form of addiction in a positive or detailed light are not allowed. Casual mentions might be permitted if part of the story’s backdrop (e.g., a side character struggling with addiction), but any promotion or glamorization of such behaviors should be avoided.
Going forward
Later down the road, we’ll implement a few others things such as:- Content warnings / trigger alerts - for stories that are okay but might shock some even within the 13+ rules. For now, even if creators add a warning at the beginning, we’ll stick to the rules above,- Story flagging system - give you the power to help us protect our community by reporting potentially problematic stories. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to tell us on Discord, in any channel or in DM 🙏We wish you a happy and fulfilling experience on toongether, and we hope those few rules will help you understand what we’re trying to achieve.
